A suggested sequence of questions when you are worried someone has thoughts of suicide

Do try to remember that if anyone states they wish they were dead, or that they have been thinking of trying to end their life, it is VERY helpful to reassure the person that you and other friends, family and colleagues will keep supporting them until any thoughts of dying fade away.
Are things so bad you wish you did not wake up in the morning?
Do you actually wish you were not alive?
Are those thoughts weak, medium or strong?
Have you thought about doing something to yourself?
Are those thoughts about doing something to yourself weak, medium or strong?
Please see the section "Crisis", or offer to go with them to a professional or to a hospital. Or insist that they call a crisis line at least, and that they get back to you after doing this. Or consider calling an ambulance.
Have you been considering what you might do?
Have you made any preparations to end your life?
Have you been close to doing something to yourself?
Have you been taking deliberate risks with your safety?
Have you actually done anything to hurt yourself?
Were you hoping what you did would end your life?
If the answer to any of these more complex questions is Yes, please involve professionals or ambulance or bring them to a doctor or hospital. Promises not to attempt suicide when the desire is high, or not to try again after a previous attempt, need a professional opinion.
