Supporting Someone Now
Easy practical steps to keep them safe
This plain-language guide is for friends and family. You do not need special skills or the right words. Being present and staying connected helps.
More messages and more people equals more safety
Quick Support Checklist
Stay connected: send a message,
Or make a call,
Or sit with them.
Reduce isolation: avoid leaving them alone if you are worried.
Lower intensity: suggest something simple like a walk, TV, or a hot drink.
Keep things calm: silence is okay. You don't need to fix anything.
Know who to contact if things get worse.
What to Do Now
Make contact now. A short message is enough: "I'm here with you." Every message helps.
Be together if possible, or stay connected by phone or video.
Choose a low-stress activity: walk around a shopping mall, sit in a café, watch a familiar show.
Keep the environment safer: stay in shared or public spaces if you can.
Remove excessive medication, or car keys if you can get their agreement.
Remove alcohol if you can, to lessen the risks of impulsive actions.
If risk increases, contact crisis support or emergency services.
Crisis Support
We have multiple contacts listed in Crisis
Useful question/message:
"If our positions were reversed, and I had the problems you are describing, what would you advise me to do?"
This guide is an added layer of support. It assists but does not replace professional or crisis care.
